English is based on a deep orthography

The Guerard System offers a whole new perspective on linguistics and instructing pupils to master the mechanics of learning to spell, read and write. It will engage learners and help them to master both regular and irregular words. It will accelerate learners’ linguistic potential by providing instant, constructive and consistent help as soon as difficulties arise. It offers, in a unique way, in accordance with our deep orthography, all the help which ‘tricks’ and ‘rules’ have so far been unable to offer.

It is important that you are familiar with the terms ‘shallow’ and ‘deep’ orthography. A dictionary definition might refer to ‘orthography’ as ‘the way in which words are spelt or should be spelt.’
A shallow orthography is based on a one letter one sound correspondence and we are told that phonics works well with shallow orthographies, but English is a deep orthography. The reading and spelling of ‘cat’ in English for example should be straightforward. It satisfies the one letter one sound correspondence and young learners of English are excited about being able to read or write it.
The problem strikes...
... when you realize that English is a language based on a deep orthography and in a deep orthography letters or groups of letters represent different sounds. There are numerous irregular or exception words. Learners are told that words like ‘come’ ‘was’ ‘there’ ‘their’ ‘for’ ‘off’ ‘always’ ‘like’ they’ and ‘said’ are the ones ‘you just have to learn’ They are called the ‘sight’ word, the ones learners have to memorise. Comments like this suggest there is no system to date which offers a consistent approach, compatible with our deep orthography.

Learners are exposed to the  irregular or exception words  at  the same time they are learning ’cat’ and for this reason  The Guerard System offers a breakthrough in  helping them master these types of words also as and when they want or are ready to. They are real and common words which, regardless of age and ability they will be wanting to use throughout their school day. Employing this system offers a consistent approach which will help to avoid all the common problems and stigma attached in being unable to master such words. We all know what the common and negative knock-on effects will be for those learners further on down the line.

If you think it is unacceptable to say, in the 21st century, ‘you just have to learn these ‘then  The Guerard System might be just what you have been looking for to enhance and accelerate the potential of your learners.
